Midshipman Jack B. Rittmayer in uniform
Rittmayer was a cadet at in the U.S. Navy Academy (USNA) until he resigned on February 4, 1941 and instead enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) at Fort Sam Houston on April 19, 1941 as an aviation cadet serial number 18049440. After earning his wings he was comissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant with serial number O-432009 and later promoted to the rank of Major. On January 7, 1945 pilot P-38J 43-28836 crashed near Pinansmaan on Negros Island. Postwar, his remains were recovered and transported to the United States for permenant burial at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
