Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Constructors Number 422-4259. At the factory, completed with an unpainted aluminum finish with olive drab on the upper nose and inner sides of the engine nacelles for anti-glare. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38J-20-LO Lightning serial number 44-23255. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South Pacific (SoPAC) and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 8th Fighter Group (8th FG), 36th Fighter Squadron (36th FS) "The Flying Fiends". Assigned to pilot Captain William "Kenny" K. Giroux. Squadron Number 18 in black on the nose and tail. No nickname or nose art. On the left side of the nose below the cockpit was a scoreboard with Japanese rising sun flags (5x5x2) plus three white outlines indicating his aerial victory claims. Above was pilot W. K. Giroux and below Crew Chief. The propeller spinners had a black tip with white and black stripes. The rear booms had a diagonal black stripe with white outline. The upper wing had a diagonal black stripe with white outline. The tail had white upper and lower tips with a horizontal black stripe. Fate Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
