Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank during 1945. Constructors Number 422-8342. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38L-5-LO Lightning serial number 44-53087. Converted from a model P-38L-5-LO Lightning into a model P-38M-6-LO night fighter with radar, an elevated rear seat and extended rear canopy for a second crew member. Postwar On December 29, 1945 at Kingman Airfield and offered for sale as war surplus. On March 25, 1946 purchased by Forrest M. Bird / Bird Aviation of Long Beach, California and registered as NX62887. On June 13, 1946 acquired by David A. Bishop of Green Bay, WI and registration changed to N62887. On September 14, 1946 owned by Ralph B. Lenz of De Pere, WI. On May 26, 1947 purchased by R.C. Allwon of Wichita, Kansas. On June 25, 1948 sold to George L. Harte of Denton, TX. During December 1951 sold to Spartan Air Services Ltd., Ottawa, Ontario. During June 1952 registered in Canada as CF-GDS. On April 19, 1953 damaged while landing at Seven Islands, Quebec and repaired. On May 23, 1956 purchased by Hycon Aerial Surveys Inc. in Pasadena, CA and registered in the United States and registered as N1107V. On May 12, 1958 sold to Vern W. Cartwright / Cartwright Aerial Surveys in Sacramento, CA and painted with the company logo on the left side of the nose and registration on the upper wing with a stripe on the middle of each tail. During September 1959 registered in Venezuela as YV-C-BAR and used for aerial survey and mapping. During April 1960 returned to the United States and registered again as N1107V. On September 12, 1961 purchased by Marvin L. Gardner & Lloyd P. Nolan / Lightning & Company of Mercedes, TX. On April 3, 1964 owned by Robert H. Kucera / Kucera & Associates Inc. of Cleveland, OH. On January 12, 1967 purchased by A. G. Wilson / Wilson Flight Training Center in Kansas City, KS. On March 22, 1967 to Mark Hurd Aerial Surveys in Santa Barbara, CA. During 1968, retired from service and placed into storage. On February 23, 1968 returned to Wilson Flight Training Center. On July 3, 1969 acquired by Peter W. Kahn / Corporate Air Motive in San Jose, CA. During 1970, purchased by Peter W. Kahn of Danville, IL. On May 31, 1971 registered as N3800L and restored with the nose section from a P-38E Lightning acquired from MGM Studios. On March 27, 1973 sold to Jack Flaherty / Flaherty Factors in Monterey, CA. On September 4, 1973 sold to Wilson C. Edwards in Big Spring, TX. Display On December 7, 1981 donated to the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and is displayed at EAA AirVenture Museum (EAA Museum). The plane is painted in the markings of P-38J "Marge" 42-103993 assigned to Captain Richard I. Bong.
