The wartime caption identifies the three pilots as Irving Erickson, Oakland, Calif.; Jentry Plunkett [sic Gentry R. Plunkett, Jr.], Lynchburg, Va.; William Hosford, Somerville, Mass.Later that day, Hosford took off piloting P-39F Airacobra 41-7200 and was shot down and Killed In Action (KIA) intercepting Japanese aircraft attacking Port Moresby.
