Aircraft History
Built by Bell in Buffalo, New York. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-39N-1-BE Airacobra serial number 42-18258. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia and reassembled.

Wartime History
Assigned to the 13th Air Force (13th AF), 347th Fighter Group (347th FG), 339th Fighter Squadron (339th FS) "Sunsetters". No known nickname or nose art.

When lost, engine V-1710-85 serial number 42-96296. Armed with a 37mm cannon, two .30 caliber machine guns and two .50 caliber machine guns makers and serial numbers unknown.

Mission History
On July 14, 1943 took off from Fighter 2 (Kukum) on Guadalcanal piloted by 1st Lt. Daniel R. Wolterding on an escort mission bound for Rendova Island. The weather was poor with ceiling and visibility zero. At roughly 5:00pm, presumed lost in a storm and ran out of fuel in the vicinity of Tetepare Island (Tetipari). This P-38 was believed to have sufficient altitude and the pilot may have bailed out. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Also lost was P-39N Airacobra 42-18258 pilot 1st Lt. Morris R. Pace (MIA).

Memorials
Pace was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He earned the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart, posthumously. Pace is memorialized at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on the courts of the missing, court 5.
