Aircraft History Built by Bell in Buffalo, New York. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) P-39 Airacobra serial number unknown. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 8th Fighter Group (8th FG), 36th Fighter Squadron (36th FS). No nickname or nose art. Possibly, this aircraft had nose letter "N". Mission History On May 17, 1942 took off from 12 Mile Drome (Bomana) near Port Moresby piloted by 1st Lt Paul G. Brown on a mission to intercept A6M2 Zeros from the Tainan Kōkūtai (Tainan Air Group) on a fighter sweep over Port Moresby. During the combat, Brown's Airacobra was damaged by a 20mm cannon shell that exploded in the left wing near the star, throwing the aircraft into a spin. Damaged, Brown managed to land at 30 Mile Drome (Rorona) that was still under construction. An A-24 dive bomber piloted by Captain Floyd W. Rogers C. O. 3rd Bombardment Group (3rd BG), 8th Bombardment Squadron (8th BS), who had relocated temporarily to the airfield due to the air raid flew Brown to 7 Mile Drome as a passenger aboard his A-24, and then flew mechanics out to the Airacobra to repair it. Later this Airacobra was flown to 7 Mile Drome and continued flying. References Brown had survived several other Airacobra crashed previously including force landing P-39D 41-6982. He was later MIA / KIA piloting P-39D 41-38339 on September 25, 1942. Possibly, the serial number of this aircraft was P-39F Airacobra 41-7171 Thanks to Edward Rogers for additional information Contribute
