Pilot 1st Lt. Glenn L. Wohlford, O-726871 (MIA / KIA) MN MIA November 1, 1942 MACR none Aircraft History Built by Curtiss in Buffalo, New York. Originally intended for the Royal Air Force (RAF) as Kittyhawk Mark IA serial number ET819. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-40E-1 Warhawk serial number 41-36173. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 49th Fighter Group (49th FG), 8th Fighter Squadron (8th FS). No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On November 1, 1942 took off from 3-Mile Drome (Kila) near Port Moresby at at 6:30am one of sixteen P-40's from the 8th Fighter Squadron escorting A-20 Havocs from the 3rd Bombardment Group on a mission against Lae. Southwest of Lae at approximately 07:45 contact was made with eight to ten A6M2 Zeros. During the dog fight, Lt. Wohlford was last seen trailing smoke with a pair of Zeros on his tail. Also, flight leader Lt. Dennis saw a P-40 type aircraft in a dive with two Zeros on its tail but did not recognize the person in the cockpit nor did he see the plane crash. The flight returned to 3-Mile Drome (Kila) at approximately 9:14am. When this aircraft failed to return, it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Memorials Wohlford was officially declared dead on December 9, 1945. He is memorialized on the tablets of the missing at Manila American Cemetery.
