Pilot Sgt Maxwell Robert Walker, 417682 (KIA, BR) Burra, SA Crashed August 5, 1943 Aircraft History Built by Curtiss in Buffalo, New York. Originally intended for the Royal Air Force (RAF) as Kittyhawk Mark IA serial number ET184. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-40E-1 Warhawk serial number 41-24860. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 49th Fighter Group (49th FG) "Fighting 49ers", 7th Fighter Squadron (7th FS) "Screamin' Demons". No known nickname or nose art. On March 6, 1942 delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as P-40E Kittyhawk serial number A29-1 at Bankstown Airfield. On March 7, 1942 the aircraft took off from Bankstown Airfield on a ferry flight to Townsville to join 75 Squadron but crashed at 4:30pm near Kempsey, NSW, killing the pilot P/O Lloyd Henry Holliday, 411786. On May 22, 1942 it was sent to 5 Aircraft Depot (AD) for repairs. On October 20, 1942 assigned to 2 Operational Training Unit (2 OTU) at Mildura Airfield. On December 1, 1942 it was involved in another accident damaging the wing tip, landing gear and propeller. On January 14, 1943 it was involved in yet another landing accident when the starboard landing gear collapse. On March 19, 1943 involved in another landing accident and afterwards repaired. Mission History On August 5, 1943 took off piloted by Walker on a night mission flying night circuits and landings. After take off, a fire was observed four miles southwest of Mildura Airfield. Pilot Walker was killed in the crash. Wreckage Some wreckage can still be found at the crash site. Memorials Holliday killed piloting Kittyhawk A29-1 on March 7, 1942 was buried at the Macquarie Park Cemetery and Crematorium at C. of E. Sec. K6. Grave 6. (GMR/2). Walker killed piloting Kittyhawk A29-1 on August 5, 1943 was buried at Mildura Cemetery (Plot C, Row A, Grave 5).
