In the distance at the center left is a parked P-38 Lightning. Republic P-47D Thunderbolt 42-22668 pilot Col. Neel E. Kearby was leading a fighter sweep and claimed his 22nd aerial victory. Intercepted by a Ki-43 Oscar, he went Missing In Action (MIA) and his crash and remains found postwar.
