Pilot 2nd Lt Stuart R. Campbell (survived) Crashed September 6, 1944 MACR none Aircraft History Built by the Indiana Division of Republic Aviation was opened at Evansville, IN. Constructor Number unknown. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-47D-21-RA Thunderbolt serial number 42-22497. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 58th Fighter Group (58th FG), 69th Fighter Squadron (69th FS). No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On September 6, 1944 took off from Saidor Airfield piloted by 2nd Lt Stuart R. Campbell on a mission and suffered an engine failure. Campbell bailed out over Saidor roughly a mile off the north coast of New Guinea. Fate of the Pilot Campbell landed in the sea and was rescued four hours later and returned to the squadron.
