Lt. Vernon R. Kruger in uniform saluting
On May 11, 1951 took off piloting F-51D Mustang 309 on a search mission and was damaged by anti-aircraft fire and bailed out behind enemy lines. His flight leader, F-51D Mustang pilot Jan Blaauw force landed nearby to aid him. Before sunset, both were rescued by a Sikorsky S-51 helicopter.
