Aircraft History Built by North American in Dallas, Texas. Constructors Number 111-36389. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-51D-20-NT Mustang serial number 44-13106. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia. Wartime History On June 25, 1945 assigned to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as Mustang A68-648 and reassembled by 1 Air Depot (1 AD). On July 29, 1945 assigned to 2 Operational Training Unit (2 OTU). On June 5, 1946 assigned to 1 APU. On June 1, 1948 transfered to RAAF Point Cook and placed into storage. On June 8, 1950 the airframe was transfered to Melbourne Technical College for use as a training aid. Restoration During 1983, transfered to the Australian War Memorial (AWM). This Mustang was restored at RAAF Point Cook and later stored at Treloar Technology Centre (Australian War Memorial Annex, AWM Annex). Display This Mustang is displayed at Australian War Memorial (AWM) with the landing gear raised in RAAF markings with HVAR rockets mounted on each wing.
