Pilot 2nd Lt. John J. Coneff, Jr., O-2067817 (MIA / KIA) Crashed August 3, 1945 MACR 16308 Aircraft History Built by North American Aviation (NAA). Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as a P-51D Mustang serial number unknown. Wartime History This aircraft was assigned to the 7th Air Force (7th AF), 506th Fighter Group (506th FG), 457th Fighter Squadron (457th FS), attached to 7th Fighter Command "Sun Setters", 301st Fighter Wing (301st FW). No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On August 3, 1945 took off from North Field (APO 86) on Iwo Jima piloted by 2nd Lt. John J. Coneff, Jr. on a Very Long Range (VLR) mission 08-02 to cover a submarine near Tokyo in Japan. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Memorials Coneff was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He is memorialized at Punchbowl on the courts of the missing, court 7.
