Aircraft History Built by Yokosuka. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as P1Y1 Ginga (Francis) manufacture number unknown. Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Ku (Air Group). No known tail code or markings. During early September 1945 surrendered in flying condition to American occupation forces in Japan. Postwar One of three P1Y1 Francis bombers selected by U.S. personnel for technical evaluation. The three were identified as FE (Foreign Equipment) with a number: FE 1700, this aircraft FE 1701 and FE 702. During late October 1945, loaded onto the USS Barnes (CVE-20) with other captured Japanese aircraft then departed Japan on November 3, 1945 bound for the United States. Postwar During February to July 1946, this aircraft was stored at Olmstead Field in Middletown, Pennsylvania where it was flown and evaluated.
