Aircraft History
Built by Yokosuka during 1945. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as P1Y1 Ginga (Frances) manufacture number unknown equipped with radar with yagi antenna in the nose and rear fuselage.

Wartime History
Assigned to an unknown Kōkūtai (Air Group). No known tail code or markings. During early September 1945 surrendered in flying condition to American occupation forces in Japan.

Postwar
One of three P1Y1 Frances bombers selected by U.S. personnel for technical evaluation. The three were identified as FE (Foreign Equipment) with a number: FE 1700, FE 1701, and this aircraft FE 1702. During late October 1945, loaded onto the USS Barnes (CVE-20) with captured Japanese aircraft then departed Japan on November 3, 1945 bound for the United States. In February 1946 stored at Olmstead Field in Middletown, Pennsylvania and test flown and evaluated until July 1946.

Storage
In September 1948 transfered from the U.S. Air Force (USAF) to the Smithsonian Institution. During January 1949, moved to Orchard Airport at Park Ridge, Illinois to a temporary storage facility. While in storage, the wings and tail were either lost or scrapped.

During the 1950s, transfered to the National Air Museum (National Air & Space Museum) with inventory number A19600340000 and stored in Suitland, Maryland. Later moved to the NASM Paul E. Garber Facility and remains in storage.

The National Air & Space Museum (NASM) collection in storage includes a P1Y1 Frances converter / inverter inventory number A19600340008. Also two Nakajima Homare 12 18 cylinder air cooled radial engines used by the P1Y1 Ginga (Frances) and B7A2 Ryusei (Grace) inventory numbers A19600340004 and A19601985000.
