Aircraft History
Built by Douglas Aircraft Company in El Segundo. Constructors Number 2565. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as SBD-4 Dauntless bureau number 10575.

Wartime History
On September 14, 1944 took off from USS Sable (IX-81) on a training mission and afterwards ditched into Lake Michigan off Chicago with the pilot surviving unhurt with the aircraft sinking into the lake.

Wreckage
This aircraft remained underwater in situ at a depth of 85'. In the 1990s discovered by A&T Recovery using sonar and salvaged.

Restoration
In 1996, transported to the National Museum of the United States Air Force (USAF Museum) and the restoration was completed as a U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) A-24 Dive Bomber with olive drab upper surfaces and gray lower surfaces.

In 1997, City Council of Chicago requested this plane for an exhibit at Midway Airport and was repainted in U.S. Navy markings with gray upper surfaces and blue lower surfaces then disassembled and shipped to Chicago to a boat yard in the South Side. The markings applied were wrong and was repainted as SBD Dauntless B-3 piloted by Ensign Frederick T. Weber from VB-6 aboard USS Enterprise (CV-6) during the Battle of Midway on June 4, 1942.

Display
On August 20, 2004 placed on display at Midway Airport to the display location in Concourse A across from the food court and reassembled over the next two days. On September 2, 2004 the SBD was unveiled at a dedication ceremony by May or Richard M. Daley who said: "This airplane is much more than a museum piece or a historical curiosity. It is a symbol of American values, a tribute to the courage and skill of our armed forces, and a reminder of just how much we owe to the men and women who made up what has rightly been called ‘the greatest generation."

and the National Museum of Naval Aviation (NMNA) took custody. During 1997, under restoration and loaned to the USAF Museum and displayed as a U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) A-24 Dive Bomber with olive drab upper surfaces and gray lower surfaces.

Display
In 2004, placed on displayed at Midway Airport in Chicago, IL.

Its exact location was unknown until 1988, when it was discovered by a crew from the Chicago based firm of A&T Recovery. Using a sonar device, the A&T team located the World War II dive bomber in about 85 feet of water near downtown Chicago"
