Built by Curtiss as Model 97B. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as SC-1 Seahawk bureau number 35362.

Wartime History
Assigned to USS Missouri (BB-63). No known nickname, nose art or markings.

Mission History
On February 10, 1945 at 8:21am catapulted from USS Missouri (BB-63) piloted by Lt. Everett N. Frothingham to observe gunnery practice fire. Shortly after take off, this Seahawk was observed in a steep glide trailing smoke from the engine and crashed attempting to land on the sea roughly 10,000 yards from the battleship. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA)

Search
After the crash, escorting destroyer USS Lewis Hancock DD-675 was dispatched to rescue the pilot but was unsucessful and his body was never recovered.

Memorials
Frothingham was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing. Frothingham did not earn the Purple Heart, posthumously because the flight was deemed to be a non-combat mission. He also has a memorial marker at Long Hill Cemetery in Salisbury, MA.

(Page 4) "At 7:20am got underway in accordance with ComTaskFor 58 Op-Order 1-45. Three (3) Seahawks were catapulted at 0821 for observation of main and secondary battery surface firing. Shortly thereafter one of the Sea hawks was observed in a steep glide trailing smoke from its engine and crashed in an attempted landing bearing 285°T, distance 10,000 yards from the ship. The Lewis Hancock (DD-675) was dispatched to vicinity of crash but later reported its attempt to save the pilot, Lieut. E. N. Frothingham, USNR, as being unsuccessful."
