Aircraft History Built by Supermarine during late 1945. This Spitfire was not commissioned with the Royal Air Force (RAF) until 1951 and operated until 1956 when decommissioned. Display During 1956, New Zealander Sir Keith Park, commander of RAF No 11 Fighter Group during the Battle of Britain and Defense of Malta had this Spitfire donated and temporarily displayed at Hobsonville Airfield. Afterwards, donated to Auckland War Memorial Museum to honor the RNZAF personnel who flew Spitfires during WWII. Charles Darby adds: "At one stage just before Sir Keith Park died we were working together to get a Hurricane for display in New Zealand, but that never eventuated." Contribute
