Aircraft History Built by Grumman as a model G-40. Constructors Number 5346. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as TBF-1C Avenger bureau number 24463. Disassembled and loaded as cargo aboard Dalfonn and shipped across the Pacific as part of defense aid to New Zealand. Wartime History Assigned to the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) as TBF-1C Avenger serial number NZ2511. on October 25, 1943 reassembled by No.1 Aircraft Depot (1 AD) at Hobsonville Airfield with Unit 36. Assigned to 30 Squadron at Gisborne Airfield. Fuselage code 511 (last three digits of the RNZAF serial number) painted in white forward of the fuselage roundel. No known nickname or nose art. On January 24, 1944 took off from Gisborne Airfield on a flight northward to Espiritu Santo then northward to the Solomon Islands then to Piva North Airfield on Bougainville. On April 25, 1944 damaged by anti-aircraft fire and returning from the mission made an emergency landing at Nissan Airfield (Green Island). Afterwards, repaired and returned to duty. On September 7, 1945 transfered to the Royal Navy (RN) Fleet Air Arm (FAA) at Hobsonville Airfield. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared. Emergency landing made at Green Island, Solomons, where NZ2511 remained until repaired. Returned to New Zealand at an unknown date and transferred to the British Navy on Sep 7, 1945 at RNZAF Base Hobsonville, Auckland. 24463 also listed as being destroyed on ground by crashing PB4Y-1 38766 Aug 9, 1944, Eniwetok, but this seems to be a mistake since 24463 was with the Royal Navy and thus could not have been involved in the Eniwetok disaster."
