Aircraft History Built by Boeing at Seattle. Constructors Number unknown. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-17 Flying Fortress model and serial number unknown. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field to the South Pacific (SoPAC). Wartime History This aircraft crashed into the sea off Koumac on New Caledonia. Wreckage During June 2001, aircraft wreckage claimed to be from a B-17 Flying Fortress was discovered underwater off Koumac. The wreckage includes a radial engine with a three bladed propeller downward on a sandy bottom and a cylindrical piece of aluminium wreckage. Depth unknown. This aircraft is yet to be confirmed or identified. It is unclear if this is from an aircraft crash, or a dumped into the sea. Justin Taylan adds: "If this wreckage is indeed from a crashed Flying Fortress, the one known loss in the vicinity is B-17E "Kai-O-Keleiwa" 41-9224 piloted by 1st Lt. Robert B.
