Wreckage
During June 2001, aircraft wreckage claimed to be from a B-17 Flying Fortress was discovered underwater off Koumac. The wreckage includes a radial engine with a three bladed propeller downward on a sandy bottom and a cylindrical piece of aluminium wreckage. Depth unknown. This aircraft is yet to be confirmed or identified. It is unclear if this is from an aircraft crash, or a dumped into the sea.

Justin Taylan adds:
"If this wreckage is indeed from a crashed Flying Fortress, the one known loss in the vicinity is B-17E "Kai-O-Keleiwa" 41-9224 piloted by 1st Lt. Robert B. Loder Missing In Action August 7, 1942."
