Location Lat 10° 57' 3S Long 142° 27' 34E Bamaga Airfield is located to the southeast of Bamaga inland from the Kennedy River on the Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland. Also known as Jack Jacky Airfield, Red Island Airfield, Red Island Point Airfield or Red Point Airfield. Wartime History During the Pacific War used by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Naming Honors On June 3, 1943 officially renamed "Higgins Field" in honor of FLTLT Brian H. Higgins pilot Catalina A24-39 who was killed in a crash on May 24, 1943. Airport codes: ICAO: YBAM and IATA: ABM. The single runway measures 5,462' x 98' oriented 31/13 and surfaced with asphalt. Michael Andrews adds: "I visited Bamaga in 1999 there is a C-47 wreck nearby as well as a Kittyhawk wreck. The Kittyhawk is just a couple of plates of aluminum and I think a wheel housing."
