ALASKA (Eleventh Air Force)
Weathered out from Kiska, three
weather missions are flown by two B-24's and two P-40's, as well as two attack
missions by two B-24's and six fighters.
U.S. Army: All Japanese resistance to U.S. Army troops on Attu ends.
China: Japanese attain their objective of capturing shipping on Upper Yangtze in W Hupeh and begin withdrawing.
SOUTH PACIFIC THEATER OF OPERATIONS (Thirteenth Air Force)
During the night of June 3-4 B-17s bomb Kahili
Airfield and the Moliko River area. B-24's attack
small vessels at Tinputs and Teop sinking one and firing the other.
SOUTHWEST PACIFIC THEATER OF OPERATIONS (Fifth Air Force)
B-24's bomb a supply dump area at Dobo, New Guinea. Other targets
attacked in the Netherland East Indies suffer little damage.
USN: ComSoPac under the command of Admiral Halsey issues Operation Plan 14-43 the basic operations plan for assault on New Georgia in the Central Solomon Islands with the main objective to secure Munda Airfield to support subsequent offensive against the northern Solomon Islands. Rear Admiral Richmond K. Turner is to overall supervision of the operation and lead the amphibious forces. The New Georgia Occupation Force will under command of Gen Hester, CG 43d Division comprised of the 43rd Division reinforced and the USMC 1st Marine Raider Battalion and 4th Marine Raider Battalion.
