Location Lat 19° 58′ 18″ S Long 146° 16′ 05″ E Breddan Airfield was located at Breddan in Queensland in Australia. To the south is Charters Towers. Construction During April 1942 built by the Allied Works Council as constructed as a dispersal field for Charters Towers Airfield. Wartime History During 1942, Breddan Airfield was used as a dispersal field for Allied aircraft. Based B-25 Mitchells from the 38th Bombardment Group including the 71st Bombardment Squadron and 405th Bombardment Squadron. During 1943 until the end of the war, used by Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as a maintenance base for No 13 Aircraft Repair Depot, No 6 Central Receiving Depot, Nos 10 and 12 Repair and Salvage Unit and No 1 Torpedo Maintenance Unit Originally intended as a satellite field for Charters Towers, Breddan was primarily a maintenance base, with No 13 Aircraft Repair Depot, No 6 Central Receiving Depot, Nos 10 and 12 Repair and Salvage Unit and No 1 Torpedo Maintenance Unit all being located at the base at various stages between 1943 and 1947. American units based at Breddan Airfield 38th BG, 71st BS (B-25) Batchelor arrives August 12, 1942–October 1, 1942 departs 17 Mile Drone (Durand) 38th BG, Headquarters Eagle Farm arrives August 7, 1942–September 30, 1942 departs Garbutt Field 38th BG, 405th BS (B-25) Ballarat arrives August 7, 1942–September 30, 1942 departs Garbutt Field Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) units based at Breddan Airfield No 13 Aircraft Repair Depot No 6 Central Receiving Depot No 10 Repair and Salvage Unit (10 RSU) 12 Repair and Salvage Unit (12 RSU) No 1 Torpedo Maintenance Unit Postwar Until 1947, continued to be used by the RAAF then disused as an airfield. Today Breddan Airfield is located along the Gregory Developmental Road in Charters Towers. On April 16, 2010 Breddan Airfield was entered on the Queensland Heritage Register as Breddan Airfield 602745. Today, World War II artifacts remain in situ including quonset hut igloos, concrete slabs, engine test area and camp areas. Several roads that pass around the former airfield are excluded from the heritage area.
