Ballarat Airfield was used by the Royal Australian Air Force (USAAF) as the 1 Wireless Air Gunners School (1 WAGS) a part of the Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS) to train air crews.

Daniel Leahy adds:
"The base for No. 1 Wireless Air Gunners School is quite big - probably the largest of all of the Empire Air Training Scheme bases in Australia. No. 1 WAGS often had between 1,500 and 2,000 personnel based in the school itself - this does not include any additional personnel on base for other purposes (No. 7 OTU briefly had people based there for radar training or something along those lines)."

Today
Still in use today as Ballarat Airport. Designated as a small airport without a control tower. Airport code: ICAO: YBLT. The airport has three runways. The first oriented 23/05 measures 4,150' x 98' surfaced with asphalt. The second is oriented 31/13 measures 1,864' x 98' surfaced with grass. The third is oriented 36/18 measures 4,085' x 98' surfaced with asphalt. The airport has refueling facilities with the Ballarat Aero Club (BAC).
