Background
The 35th Pursuit Group (35th PG) was part of the U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC). On June 20, 1941 became part of the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). During World War II, assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF) in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA). On May 15, 1942 redesignated 35th Fighter Group (35th FG) and included the Headquarters Squadron (HQ), 39th Fighter Squadron (39th FS), 40th Fighter Squadron (40th FS) and 41st Fighter Squadron (41st FS).

39th Fighter Squadron (39th FS) "Cobra In The Clouds"
The 39th Fighter Squadron (39th FS) nicknamed "Cobra In The Clouds" operated the P-39 Airacobra and P-38 Lightning and later the P-47D Thunderbolt and finally the P-51D Mustang until the end of the Pacific War.
40th Fighter Squadron (40th FS) "The Red Devils"
The 40th Fighter Squadron (40th FS) nicknamed "The Red Devils" operated the P-39 Airacobra and later the P-47 Thunderbolt and finally the P-38 Lightning.
41st Fighter Squadron (41st FS) "The Flying Buzzsaws"
The 41st Fighter Squadron (41st FS) nicknamed "The Flying Buzzsaws" operated the P-39 Airacobra and later the P-47D Thunderbolt and finally the P-51D Mustang.
