Wartime History During World War II, Amberley was used by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as a military airfield, assembly location and ferry base for aircraft arriving from the United States. Airport code ICAO: YAMB. The airfield has two runways. The first is oriented 22/04 and measures 4,997' x 148' surfaced with Porous European Mix (PEM). The second is oriented 33/15 and measures 9,997' x 148' surfaced with Porous European Mix (PEM). After September 11, 2001, RAAF Amberley was closed to the public for security reasons aside for special events or by appointment. RAAF Amberley Museum & Restoration Facility The historical aircraft hangar, contains Australia's only fully restored A-20, and is the site of a current PBY restoration.
