Location Lat 21° 14' 28S 175° 8' 59W Tongatabu Airfield is located in the southeast corner of Tongatapu (Western Tongatapu) on Tonga. Also known as "Tonga Tabu Airfield". To the east is Highway 21 that connects southward to Fuaamotu (Fua'amotu), to the southeast is Nokolo, to the east is Hamula and northeast is Lavagatoga. Construction Built by the U.S. Navy (USN) 1st Construction Battalion (Seabees), with assistance and labor provided by the U.S. Army 147th Infantry Regiment. To the west was Tongatabu Airfield (Auxiliary Landing Strip). Allied units based at Tongatabu (Tonga Tabu) U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) 13th AF, 347th FG, 68th FS (P-39, P-40) Oct 3 - Oct 28 1942 to New Caledonia 7th AF 58th FG, 68th FS (P-40) Amberly arrives May 16, 1942–late October 1943 Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) 15 Squadron (21 x P-40E and P-40K) October 27, 1943 - ? Today Still in use today as Fua Amotu Airport (Fuaʻamotu Airport) classified as a small airport. The airport has two runways: the first is oriented 29/11 and measures 8,795' x 147' surfaced with asphalt. The second is oriented 35/17 and measures 4,951' x 195' surfaced with grass. Airport codes: ICAO: NFTF IATA: TBU. The airport is a port of entry served by Air New Zealand, Fiji Airways, Fiji Link, Real Tonga and Virgin Australia Airlines.
