Location Long Field was located near Hayes Creek to the south of Darwin in Northern Territory of Australia. Also known as Long Airfield, Long Strip or Long Field. Construction In late 1943, built by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) No.14 Airfield Construction Squadron in as a single runway 2,400' x 50' surfaced with bitumen with fifty-three aircraft revetments. This airfield was developed to support Fenton Field the main airfield used by the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) 380th Bombardment Group (380th BG). American units based at Long 380th BG, 529th BS (B-24) Manbulloo arrives November 7, 1943–July 10, 1944 Darwin 380th BG, 531st BS (B-24) Manbulloo arrives December 5, 1943–July 21, 1944 Darwin Japanese missions against Long Airfield August 14, 1943 September 15 1943 at 12:25 am September 18, 1943 at 3:50 am Today Abandoned since the war. The remains of the main runway are visible, along with taxiways and aircraft hardstands visible, but in a very deteriorated state. No buildings or other structures remain. The airfield is accessible by road by traveling south on Stuart Highway (Highway 1) then turning west on Dorat Road (Highway 23), then turning south after about 1.5 Km on Douglas Road. The airfield lies to the east, after about 3-4km, by crossing scrub land.
