Location Reid River Airfield was located to the south of the Reid River in Queensland in Australia. Construction A single runway was built at this location oriented east to west. Wartime History On April 22, 1942 the first combat mission from Reid River was B-26 Marauders of the 22nd Bombardment Group (22nd BG), 408th Bombardment Squadron (408th BS). This unit operated from this airfield until January 1943. In early February 1943, both the 2nd Bombardment Squadron and 408th Bombardment Squadron converted to B-25D Mitchell bombers. Allied units based at Reid River U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) 22nd BG, 2nd BS (B-26) Garbutt arrives April 9, 1942–October 3, 1943 departs Dobodura 22nd BG, 18th RS/408th BS (B-26) Garbutt arrives April 12, 1942–October 15, 1943 departs Dobodura Today Disused since the war as an airfield, the former base is private property used for mustering cattle and horses. An arch marks the western edge of the strip, easily accessible from the main road. With permission of the owner, visitors can tour the strip. On the eastern edge of the strip are concrete pads from former buildings including the mess hall and first air station. Also, there is the remains of a B-26 crash site, and former 2nd BS camp area. Small markers, left by veterans in 1992 mark these locations.
