Location Lat 18° 49' 51S Long 159° 45' 51W Aitutaki Airfield is located at an elevation of 14' above sea level on the northeast of Aitutaki Island in the Cook Islands. The runway nearly spans the width of the island. Still in use today as Aitutaki Airport. Construction Built by U.S. and New Zealand personnel. Wartime History During the Pacific War, Aitutaki Airfield was part of the more easterly ferry route to the South Pacific (South Pacific Route No. 2) located between Penrhyn Airfield located 688 miles away and the next leg Tongatapu Airfield located 1,013 miles away. The airfield was operated by Air Transport Command (ATC), 1528th Army Air Force Base Unit (1528th AAFBU). Today Still in use today as Aitutaki Airport as a small airport with two runways. The first runway is oriented 27/09 measures 4,555' x 180' surfaced with coral. The second oriented 32/14 measures 5,920' x 100' surfaced with asphalt that was upgraded in 2004.
