Location Lat 11° 38' 28N Long 92° 43' 47E Port Blair Airfield is located to the south of Port Blair on South Andaman Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India. Still in use today as Veer Savarkar International Airport or Veer Savarkar Airport. Construction Built prewar by the British. Wartime History On March 23, 1942 occupied by the the Japanese Army 18th Division without resistance when they landed at Port Blair. Afterwards, Port Blair Airfield was used by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as a military base. Allied missions against Port Blair April 2, 1942–April 15, 1944 Attacked by Allied aircraft between April 1942 until April 1944. Occupied by the Japanese for the duration of the war until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945. Today Still in use today as Port Blair Airport. In 2002, renamed Veer Savarkar International Airport after after freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar who was detained at Cellular Jail in Port Blair for ten years. This small airport has a single runway oriented 22/04 measures 10,795' x 148' surfaced with asphalt. Airport codes: ICAO: VOPB IATA: IXZ. Serviced by several regional airlines including Air India Regional, GoAir, IndiGo, SpiceJet and Vistara. The airport shares facilities with INS Utkros a Indian Navy Air Station used by the Indian Navy.
