Location
Lat 35° 45' 53N Long 140° 23' 11E Narita Airport is located on the border between Narita and Shibayama in Chiba Prefecture on Honshū in Japan. Located to the west is Tokyo. Also known as Narita International Airport.
Prewar
This location was farm land and part of the
Imperial Household farming estate.
Construction
In 1963, the Japanese transport ministry commissioned a study of alternative airport locations. In 1966, a Japanese government plan was released to the public recommend a site at Sanrizuka village and Shibayama village between between Narita and Shibayama as
the site of a new airport to serve the Tokyo area instead of Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport).
Today
Narita Airport is a large civilian airport and port of entry with two runways. The first is oriented 34L/16R measures 1,3123' x 196' surfaced with asphalt. The second is oriented 34R/16L measures 7,152' x 196' surfaced with asphalt.
