Location
Lat 6° 10' 1N Long 102° 17' 35E  Kota Bharu Airfield is located at an elevation of 16' above sea level in Kota Bharu (Kota Baru) on the eastern coast of the Malay Peninsula in Kelantan State in Malaysia. Wartime spelling: Kota Baru. Postwar, known as Pengkalan Chepa Airport. Today known as Sultan Ismail Petra Airport or Kota Bharu Sultan Ismail Petra Airport.

Construction
Built prewar by the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a single east-west runway oriented 10/28 known as RAF Kota Bharu. During the Japanese occupation, they added a second runway oriented northeast-southwest oriented 25/08 that was slightly shorter than the prewar British runway.

Wartime History
At the start of the Pacific War, defended by the British Army Indian 9th Division. On December 8, 1941 Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Hudsons from No. 1 Squadron took off on bombing missions against the Japanese invasion force off Kota Bharu.

On December 9, 1941 captured by the Imperial Japanese Army. Immediately, Japanese aircraft arrive from Indo China (Vietnam) and use Kota Bharu Airfield for the rest of the Malayan campaign. In early May 1945 targeted by American bombers. Occupied by the Japanese until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945.

Postwar
A civilian passenger terminal was added and became known as Pengkalan Chepa Airport. Later renamed Sultan Ismail Petra Airport. Also known as Kota Bharu Sultan Ismail Petra Airport,.

Today
In 1999, the government announced that the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport will be relocated to a new terminal building. The project started in September 2000 and was completed in June 2002. Today known as Sultan Ismail Petra Airport. The single runway is oriented 28/10 measures 6,982' x 150' surfaced with asphalt. Airport codes ICAO: WMKC and IATA: KBR.
