Location
Lat 6° 7' 60N Long 102° 15' 0E Kota Bharu is located on the eastern coast of the Malay Peninsula in Kelantan State in Malaysia. Wartime spelling Kotabharu. Also known as Kota Bharu Town.
Wartime History
On December 7, 1941 Operation "E" the Japanese invasion of Malaya began with a convoy including transports Sakura Maru, Awajisan Maru and Ayatosan Maru transporting the Japanese Army 5th Division, escorted by Sendai, Ayanami, Isonami, Shikinami, Uranami with minesweepers W-2 and W-3 plus subchaser CH-9 arrived off Kota Bharu.
On December 8, 1941 just after 12:25am Japanese warships and transports anchored one and half miles from Kuala
Pak Amat and Sabak beach near Kota Bharu. The Japanese warships began shelling Kota Bharu. These hostilities preceeded the attack on Pearl Harbor by one hour and 25 minutes. Following the bombardment, the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) 25th Army commanded by General Tomoyuki Yamashita landed an estimated
5,300 men at Kota Bharu. Defending, the 8th Indian Brigade defended bravely but were overwhelmed. That same day, the Japanese occupied Kota Bharu Airfield (Pengkalan Chepa). By December 9, 1941 with
reinforcements, the Japanese occupied Kota Bharu town for the remainder of the Pacific War. Starting in the middle of 1945 within range of U.S. bombers. Occupied by the Japanese until the official surrender of Japan.
