Japanese missions against Hamardaba and Hamardaba Airfield
May 15, 1939 - September 15, 1939

May 15, 1939
(JAAF) Single light bomber (Ki-30?) attacks border post at Hamardaba, claiming to destroy it.

June 25, 1939
(JAAF) Two echelons of 27 x I-16s and 13 x I-15, met 17 x Ki-27 from 1st Sentai, led by C.O. Lt Col Toshio Kato, over Hamar-Daba Mount.  Japanese declined the fight and fled eastward (acting as bait), and Soviets followed (abandoning planned strike) and encountered 40 fighters from 1st Sentai, 11th Sentai and 24th Sentai, erupting into a dogfight.  Soviets lost two I-16s piloted by Lt. Krasnochub and Shmatko.  Zabaluyev’s I-15 was damaged and force landed.  Mayor Sergey Gritsevets landed to rescue his commander, flying 20 minutes at ground level, covered by two other pilots:  Poloz and Balashev.

July 3, 1939
(JAAF) Massive dogfight over Hamardaba between JAAF and VSS fighters. Two Japanese bailed out and were taken prisoner.

August 20, 1939
(JAAF) At 4:30, forty 11th Sentai Ki-27 escort ten 61st Sentai Ki-21s on a bombing mission over Hamardaba. Over the target, they meet anti-aircraft fire but drop 77 x 100kg bombs o forward airfields and confluence bridge. Intercepted by 22nd iap I-16s and I-153 including some missle armed I-16. Soviets claim three victories, not confirmed or denyed by JAAF, who claim 32 enemy shot down. One I-16 force landed damaged and VSS admits loss of five.

September 15, 1939
(JAAF) At midday, Ki-30s plus Ki-21 from the 61st Sentai, escorted by Ki-27 attack Hamardaba. Intercepted by I-153 from 56th iap and I-16s from 22nd iap. Lost were two Ki-27s
