Wartime History During World War II, used by the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) as a military airfield. RNZAF units based at Whenuapai 15 Squadron (P-40s) formed June 1, 1942 B-17E "Texas Tornado" Serial Number 41-2667 Pilot Cobb crashed June 9, 1942 during take off Today Still in use as a military airport known as Whenuapai Airport with three runways. The first runway is oriented 21/03 measures 6,665' x 148' surfaced with asphalt. The second runway is oriented 26/08 measures 5,187' x 148' surfaced with concrete.
