Location Lat 36° 52' 0S Long 174° 46' 0E Auckland is located on the northern coast of the North Island of New Zealand. At the eastern edge is the suburb of Devonport. Borders Waitematā Harbour (Auckland Harbor) and beyond Hauraki Gulf to the east. Wartime History During the Pacific War, Auckland became an important base for Allied warships and transports transiting via Auckland on their way to Australia, New Hebrides and Solomon Islands. On March 13, 1942 during the night, Japanese submarine I-25 launches their E14Y Glen floatplane piloted by W/O Fujita Nobuo overflies the city and returns safely. During the night of May 24-25, 1942 another flight was made by another E14Y "Glen" piloted by W/O Susumoi Ito. Unaware this was an enemy aircraft, one of the Auckland area airfields turned on their lights to assist the aviator.
