Location Akle Airfield was located near Akle (Acle) in a flat area at the base of the Sierra Madre Range in Bulacan Province on Luzon in the Philippines. Construction During early January 1945, a flat area was cleared and packed down by Filipino laborers, to allow small aircraft to land and rescue a group of 28 American aviators. At the time, this location was behind enemy lines. By January 12, 1945 the runway was ready for use. Wartime History Around January 12, 1945 a U.S. Army Piper L-4 Grasshopper landed to begin the rescue of the 28 American aviators from behind enemy lines. The group included Col. Gwen G. Atkinson pilot P-47D 42-25419 shot down January 3, 1945. Later, a group of U.S. Army Alamo Scouts were landed at Akle Airfield to perform a reconnaissance of the Manila area.
