Port Moresby Air Raid November 24, 1942
Japanese night bombing missions over Port Moresby (Raid #88 and Raid #89)
On November 24, 1942 during the night with a Waning Gibbous (two days after a full moon) the Japanese conducted two air raids over Port Moresby. The first about 8:00pm ten bombs and incendiaries were dropped on Port Moresby near the general hospital without damage or casualties. The second about midnight eight bombs were dropped in the vicinity of 7 Mile Drome without damage or casualties.
At 14 Mile Drome (Schwimmer) pilot 2nd Lt. Richard I. Bong noted in his logbook "experienced first bombing at night", the first air raid he experienced in New Guinea.
