Location Lat 3° 8.65 S Long 142° 20.75 E Aitape Airport is located to the southwest of Aitape inland from the north coast of New Guinea. Between 1884 until September 1914 part of Deutsch Neu Guinea (German New Guinea). Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Sepik District in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in the Aitape-Lumi District of West Sepik Province (Sandaun Province) in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Construction Built postwar as a single runway oriented 16/34 roughly north to south surfaced with grass. Robert Parer adds: "There was a MAF [Missionary Air Fellowship] crashed just inland from Catholic Mission station at Pes .8 km from Aitape. The Wilkinson family of 5 died and the pilot and one passenger too. Not much of aircraft left. There was one [crash] at Catholic Mission airstrip Aitape town which was carrying empty Mobil 44 gal drums from Lumi and as dual controls drums moved foward and ended up in creek. [The plane was] Taken and dumped out near Aitape High School." Today Disused as a landing ground and overgrown. Airport code: IATA: ATP. Also abbeviated as APE.
