Location Lat 5° 21' 37S 147° 1' 4E Long Island Cub Strip was built to the west of Poin Kiau on northern Long Island. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Madang Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Construction In late December 1943 or early January 1944 over a five day period, the U.S. Army 592nd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment (592nd EBSR) cleared a small runway measuring 1,500' x 50' for use by light aircraft. A road was built eastward toward Malala or supplies and personnel landed were barged to the base area at Malala or Matapun. Wartime History Once completed, this runway was used by light aircraft light aircraft including U.S. Army Piper L-4 Grasshopper and Stinson L-5 Sentinel to support the Allied force on Long Island until withdrawn in late February 1945.
