    Madang Province  Papua New Guinea (PNG)
Location
Madang Province is located on the north coast of New Guinea. Prewar and during the Pacific War known as the Madang District in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The provincial capital is Madang (Madang Town). Borders Morobe Province to the southeast, Eastern Highlands Province, Chimbu Province (Simbu) to the south and Western Highlands Province to the southwest, East Sepik Province to the west and Bismarck Sea to the north.

Wartime History
On January 1, 1943 the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA), 18th Army including the 20th Division and 41st Division plus supporting personnel occupied Madang and the surround areas. During April 1943, 18th Army commander Lt. General Hatazo Adachi established his headquarters at Madang until withdrawing to Wewak.

Inland is Dumpu, where the attack on Shaggy Ridge was launched by the Australian Army. As Japanese forces retreated from Lae over the Finnesteire Mountain towards Madang, many died of starvation and disease.

On April 22, 1944 the Madang area was bypassed by the U.S. Army island hopping amphibious landings at Aitape and Hollandia. On April 25, 1944 the Australian Army 7th Division liberated Madang then advanced northward on the north coast road. Afterards, the Madang area was developed into a base area to support the Allied operations.

Alexishafen (Alexishaven)  located on the north coast Catholic mission and prewar airfield used by Japanese.

Bostrem Bay  located inside Sek Harbor off the north coast of New Guinea.
Wongat Island  located to th east of Alexishafen off the north coast of New Guinea.
Cape Croisilles  located to the north of Alexishafen.
Nake  inland village located to the west of Alexishafen.
Admosin Island  located off Alexishafen mission southeast of Sek Harbor.
Megas Island  located off Alexishafen mission southeast of Sek Harbor.
Sek Island  located off Alexishafen Japanese supply base.

North Coast of New Guinea

North Coast Road (North Coast Highway)  built by the Germans connected the north coast of New Guinea.

Stephansort  located on the north coast established by the Germans then abanodned.
Mindjim River (Minjeng River)  the mouth is located on the north coast of New Guinea.
Bauak  inland village connected by the Bogadjim Road.
Kwato  inland village connected by the Bogadjim Road.
Yaula  inland village connected by the Bogadjim Road.
Daumoina  inland village connected by the Bogadjim Road.
Yokopi (Wagobi, Saiba, Saipa or Saipa 1)  located to the the Finisterre Range.

Rai Coast District
Saidor  located inland from the north coast of New Guinea Saidor Airfield.
Sawoi (Saui)  located on the north coast of New Guinea.
Dekays Bay  located on the north coast of New Guinea.
Kul  located on the north coast of New Guinea.
Bau Plantation  located on the north coast of New Guinea.
Yalau Plantation  located on the north coast of New Guinea.
Dumun  inland village used by the Japanese as an outpost.
Gabutamon  inland village shelled by U.S. Army 75mm howitzers.
Biliau (Beliau)   located on the coast of New Guinea including Yamai Airfield.
Long Island (Arop, Ahrup, Pono)  located in the Vitiaz Strait off the off the north coast of New Guinea.
Crown Island  located to the northwest of Long Island between the Vitiaz Strait and Bismarck Sea.

Ramu Valley

Annanberg (Annenberg)  borders the Ramu River includes prewar Annenberg Mission.
Atemble (Atemple)  borders the Ramu River.
Siniap  located in Ramu Valley to the north of the Ramu River.
Kesawai  located on the eastern side of the Eviria River and Ramu River in the Ramu Valley.
Dumpu  located in the Ramu Valley.
Faita  located in the Ramu Valley includes Faita Airfield.
Braman  located in the Ramu Valley near Faita.

Finisterre Range (Finisterres)  inland mountain range on the Huon Peninsula.
Shaggy Ridge  located in the Finisterre Range battlefield between the Australian Army and Japanese.
Tauta  located at an elevation of 4,038' in the Finisterre Range.
Adelbert Mountains  inland mountain range to the northwest of Madang.

Bismarck Sea  located off the north coast of New Guinea.

Bogia  located on the north coast of New Guinea southwest of Hansa Bay.
Kolakola Island  located off Bogia.
Ulingan (Uligan, Ulingen)  located on the north coast of New Guinea between Bogia and Madang.
Kronprinz Harbor  located on the north coast of New Guinea.
Meiwok (Mawok, Mawock, Meivok)  located to the west of Ulingan includes postwar Kelcia Airfield.
Bunabun Harbor  located on the north coast of New Guinea between Madang and Hansa Bay.
Cape Gourdon  located on the north coast of New Guinea.
Malas  located on the north coast of New Guinea between Madang and Hansa Bay.
