Location Madang Province is located on the north coast of New Guinea. Prewar and during the Pacific War known as the Madang District in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The provincial capital is Madang (Madang Town). Borders Morobe Province to the southeast, Eastern Highlands Province, Chimbu Province (Simbu) to the south and Western Highlands Province to the southwest, East Sepik Province to the west and Bismarck Sea to the north. Wartime History On January 1, 1943 the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA), 18th Army including the 20th Division and 41st Division plus supporting personnel occupied Madang and the surround areas. During April 1943, 18th Army commander Lt. General Hatazo Adachi established his headquarters at Madang until withdrawing to Wewak. Inland is Dumpu, where the attack on Shaggy Ridge was launched by the Australian Army. As Japanese forces retreated from Lae over the Finnesteire Mountain towards Madang, many died of starvation and disease. On April 22, 1944 the Madang area was bypassed by the U.S. Army island hopping amphibious landings at Aitape and Hollandia. On April 25, 1944 the Australian Army 7th Division liberated Madang then advanced northward on the north coast road. Afterards, the Madang area was developed into a base area to support the Allied operations. Madang Town Area Madang (Madang Town) located on the north coast bordering Madang Harbor.
