Location Lat 5° 52' 60S Long 145° 43' 60E Dumpu is located at an elevation of 958' / 291m in the Ramu Valley in New Guinea. Also spelled Tumpu. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in Madang Distict in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Madang Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Prewar A walking trail spanned from Dumpu into the Highlands and was rougly a day and a half walk to Kainantu. Wartime History During March 1942, the Dumpu area was occupied by the Japanese. In late December 1942 targeted by Allied planes. On October 4, 1943 the Dumpu area was occupied by the Australian Army without opposition. By late November 1943, the Australian Army 7th Division was also based at Dumpu. Afterwards, the Australian Army 11th Division Headquarters was flown from Dobodura to Dumpu. American & Japanese missions against Dumpu June 27, 1943–March 15, 1944 Today Dumpu has a cattle ranch station nearby. Dumpu Airfield Prewar airfield expanded in late 1943 with two runways No 1 Strip (East Base) and No 2 Strip (West Base). Dumpu War Cemetery Established at Dumpu for Australian Army war dead with a dedication ceremony on February 6, 1944.
