JAAF ? Hiko Sentai
|
Aircraft History Built by Kawasaki completed in the middle of February 1943. True serial number 314. Delivered to the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) as Type 99 Light Bomber Kyu Kyu Sohkei / Ki-48-II Lily manufacture number 1314. Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Hiko Sentai (Air Regiment) in New Guinea. No known markings. The manufacture number 1314 was noted on two Lily wrecks: a Lily shot down near Dumpu, alternately a Lily abandoned at Alexishafen Airfield. Or, parts with manufacture number 1314 were present in both wrecks or one is in error. The first possibility: On March 15, 1944 took off armed with Ka-4 bombs on a bombing mission of Lilys from 208th Sentai (208th Air Regiment) against Nadzab Airfield as part of the second wave. Due to bad weather diverted to bomb Dumpu Airfield. Over the target, this Lily was shot down by anti-aircraft fire and crashed near Dumpu. The crash site of this Lily near Dumpu was surveyed by Allied intelligence that noted manufacture number 1314. It is possible this number was inaccurate or not the plane's manufacture number or a part from 1314. The second possibility: Part from the Lily or a dataplate was abandoned at Alexishafen Airfield. During the 1970s, Charles Darby noted manufacture number 1314. References Note, it is unclear if Ki-48 Lily 1314 was abandoned at Alexishafen or shot down May 15, 1944 and crashed near Dumpu. Possibly, Allied intelligence incorrectly noted the manufacture number. Type 99 Light Bomber / Ki-48 Lily Production Figures by Jim Long CEAR "Japanese Aircraft Makers' Plates and Markings" page 12 Lists Ki-48 Lily 1314 as built mid February 1943, abandoned March 15, 1944 and lists its location as Dumpu, NG Contribute
