Location Lat 5° 49' 60S Long 146° 7' 0E The Finisterre Range (Finisterres) is a mountain range located on the Huon Peninsula near the northern coast of New Guinea. Also known as simply the "Finisterres". Borders the Markham Valley and Ramu Valley to the south, the Saruwaged Range to the southeast and Astrolabe Bay to the northwest. The range includes Shaggy Ridge. Today, the Finisterre Range encompasses Morobe Province and Madang Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History The Finisterre Mountains were not occupied by either the Japanese or Allied forces. During late 1943, retreating Japanese forces from the Lae and Salamaua area crossed the Finisterre Mountains as they retreated to the north coast towards Madang. During their trek, many died of starvation or exposure along the way. During 1944, many American aircraft crashed into the Finisterre Mountains due to navigation or weather related accidents.
