Location Morobe Province is located on the north coast of New Guinea. Between 1884 until September 1914 part of Deutsch Neu Guinea (German New Guinea). Prewar and during the Pacific War known as Morobe District in the Territory of New Guinea. Today Morobe Province is part of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Borders Oro Province (Northern Province) to the southeast, Gulf Province to the southwest, Eastern Highlands Province to the west and Madang Province to the northwest. To the east borders the Huon Gulf and to the northeast borders Vitiaz Strait and the Bismarck Sea. Further to the east is West New Britain Province on New Britain. Wartime History Japanese forces landed at Lae on January 22, 1942. After the area was liberated by the Allies during late 1943, the area was developed into an airfield and base area. Markham Valley Markham Valley located between the Finisterre Range to the north and the Highlands to the south. Markham River located in the Markham Valley empties into Huon Gulf to the west of Lae and south of Nadzab. Nadzab located in the Markham Valley developed into Nadzab Airfield complex. Chivasing located in the Markham Valley to the west of Nadzab. Gusap (Susua, Goosap) located in the Markham Valley developed into Gusap Airfield complex. Kaiapit located in the Ramu Valley. Boana located at the northern edge of the Markham Valley. Mountain Ranges Finisterre Range (Finisterres) mountain range on the Huon Peninsula bordering Saruwaged Range. Saruwaged Range (Sarawaket, Sarawaget) mountain range on the on the Huon Peninsula bordering Finisterres. Mount Bangeta (Mount Sarawaged) located in the Saruwaged Range, highest peak in Morobe Province. Wantoat located in the Finisterre Mountains of New Guinea includes prewar Wantoat Airfield. Lae District Lae located on the north coast of New Guinea bordering Huon Gulf includes prewar Lae Airfield. Mount Lunaman (Mt. Mount Lunaman) feature in Lae inland from the coast overlooking Huon Gulf. Malahang located on the north coast of New Guinea includes prewar Malahang Airfield. Huon Area Huon Peninsula located on the north coast of New Guinea borders Huon Gulf. Huon Gulf located on the north coast of New Guinea borders the Huon Peninsula and Lae. Dampier Strait located between Umboi Island and West New Britain. Vitiaz Strait located between Huon Peninsula on New Guinea and New Britain. Bismarck Sea body of water located off northern New Guinea. Finschafen Area Finschafen (Finschhafen, Finschaven) located on the southeast tip of the Huon Peninsula. Langemak Bay (Langemark , Langemaak) located to the north of Finschafen. Dreger Haffen (Dreger Harbor) located to the south of Finschafen used as a PT Boat base. Scarlet Beach located six miles north of Finschafen site of Australian Army landing September 22, 1943. Kakakog (Kakakogwith) high ground above the Bumi River and Scarlet Beach. Tami Island located near Finschafen. Sattelberg (Sattleberg) located in the mountains battle between Australian Army and Japanese Army defenders. Nassau Bay located on the north coast of New Guinea June 29-30, 1943 U.S. Army landing. Lababia borders Nassau Bay. Duali (Bitoi) located on the north coast of New Guinea to the north of Nassau Bay. Salamaua Area Salamaua (Salamoa) located on an isthmus on the north coast of New Guinea. Salamaua Harbor (Samoa Harbor) borders Salamaua to the north. Kela (Keila) located on the north coast of New Guinea bordering Salamaua Harbor. Kela Point (Keila Point) located on the north coast of New Guinea bordering Salamaua Harbor. Bayern Bay borders Salamaua to the south. Logui located southwest of Salamau includes Salamau Airfield. Laupui Point located to the southwest of Salamaua. Lababia Island located to the south of Salamaua. Bobdubi located to the south of the Francisco River. Busama located inland from the north coast of New Guinea. Komiatum (Kamiaturn) located to the south of the Francisco River. Mount Tambu (Mt. Tambu) located at the southern edge of Scout Ridge. Hidden Valley prewar gold mine located to the southwest of Wau Black Cat (Blackcat) prewar gold mine located to the northeast of Wau connected by the Black Cat Trail Inland Locations Tsili-Tsili (Tsile-Tsile, Fabua, Gomorok) located roughly forty miles from Lae with Marilinan to the southeast. Marilinan (Maralinan) located to the southeast of Tsili Tsili. Pesen located to the north of Tsili Tsili and Marilinan Engati inland village nearby is Mount Eiyawaiy (Mt. Eiyawaiy). Mount Strong (Mt.
