Location
Kakakog is a crest line on the north coast of New Guinea that overlooks Finschhafen and Scarlet Beach. Also known as "Kakakogwith". Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Morobe District of the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
Wartime History
During September 1943, Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) Special Naval Landing Force (SNLF) soldiers defended the Kakakog
cliff area with machine guns emplaced in solidly sand bagged positions. After the Allied landing on September 22, 1943 this position blocked the advance of 2/15th Battalion after they advanced over the Bumi River.
The slope of Kakakog was scaled by Australian troops forced to climb on their hands and
knees, while hacking through jungle and subjected to continuous fire. Finally, the Australians were able to storm the crest line with bayonets and grenades and took the high ground. On October 2, 1943 the remaining Japanese withdrew from Kakakog.
