Wartime History
During the Japanese occupation of Lae, used as a lookout point. The Japanese dug tunnels into the hillside and built an underground hospital inside the hill.

In late September 1943, after the Australian Army liberated the area, the tunnel entrances were sealed with explosives. Also known as "Hospital Hill" or "Fortress Hill".

Today
This feature is also known to locals as Lo' Wamung meaning "first hill" with a radio tower and navigation lights on the summit. The Butiban Road is located to the south. The Lae Pistol Club has a range at the southeast edge of Mount Lunaman. The Lae International Hotel is located at the northwest edge. To the southwest is the Sir Ignatius Kilage Sports Stadium and beyond the Lae Yacht Club.

Richard Leahy adds:
"I have heard that some brave souls have penetrated some of the tunnels and found very little. Mt. Lunaman consists of gravel, not rock and is unstable. Thus nobody has been game enough to go in too far."
