Location The Huon Gulf is located on the north coast of New Guinea. Borders the Huon Peninsula to the north. The western edge is also known as Lae Harbor bordering Lae. Also on the western edge is the mouth of the Markham River and Labu and the Labu Lakes. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History On March 7, 1942 a Japanese ships enter the Huon Gulf. On March 8, 1942 the Japanese begin landing troops at Malahang and quickly occupied Lae. On March 10, 1942 attacked by Allied aircraft. Used by the Japanese as an anchorage for warships, cargo ships and barges until early Septmeber 1943. Allied missions against Huon Gulf March 10, 1942–September 4, 1943 On On September 4, 1943 Allied warships arrive in Huon Gulf and the area is used by Allied forces until the end of the Pacific War. Tenyo Maru Sunk March 10, 1942 by SBD dive bombers off Lae Airfield with the bow visible until the 1970s.
