| Location Lat 6° 15' 0S Long 146° 16' 60E Kaiapit is located an elevation of 1,069' / 325m in the Ramu Valley in New Guinea. Also known as Kaiapit Mission. To the southeast roughly 45 miles away is Nadzab. To the northwest is the Markham Valley and Dumpu. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Prewar Kaiapit Mission was established at this location. Wartime History After the Allied landings at Nadzab and Lae, a Japanese Army force equivalent to roughly a brigade, moved down the Ramu Valley in a last ditch attempt to recapture Nadzab. Just before the Japanese reached Kaiapit, the Australian Army 2/6th Australian Commando Squadron and Papuan Infantry Battalion (PIB) B Company arrived and ambushed the Japanese force when it arrived. Surprised, the Japanese fanned out but were quickly routed and the survivors withdrew up the Markham Valley towards Dumpu. On October 4, 1943 Australian Army soldiers occupy Dumpu without opposition. American missions against Kaiapit June 27, 1943–September 20, 1943 Today During the 1980s, a landslide covered much of the 1943 battlefield area. Kaiapit Airfield Prewar airfield used to a limited capacity by the Allies but not further developed B-24D "Toughy" Serial Number 42-40525 Pilot Terpning crashed May 7, 1944 discovered 1974. Vultee Vengeance Serial Number A27-83 Pilot Pike force landed February 27, 1944 wreckage remained until 1960s. Contribute
